SECANS (2010)

The main objective of the SECANS project is to boost agricultural activities and local development compatible with conservation and habitat improvement, and the steppe birds that inhabit, through the implementation of actions and measures with a demonstrative character.

The SECANS project is developed in two of the most unique SPAs of the agricultural plain of Lleida, the area of Mas de Melons and Alfès (Segrià and Garrigues) and Plans de Sió (Urgell).

Throughout the duration of the SECANS project, it is carried out a series of actions in order to recover vital areas for target species, reduce the impact of farming on wildlife and the environment, and optimize production efficiency of agricultural systems. Broadly speaking, these measures are enshrined in:

  • Restoration of watering places

  • Management of set-aside and fallow
  • Inventories and recovery of emblematic elements of landscape
  • Management of extensive livestock
